Bleeding Control
Sometimes, you just want to take something that's bleeding and stop it from bleeding.

Direct Pressure
If you grab a bandage or square of clean gauze, place it over the bleeding hole, and squeeze firmly, it can sometimes reduce bleeding.
Indirect Pressure
If you choke off the artery leading to the area, this can sometimes reduce bleeding.
There are circulatory diagrams which show where one can choke off bleeding, and "the elbow" and "the leg part of your crotch" are crude gestures towards the femoral, ulnar, and brachial arteries, whose constriction tends to reduce any downstream bleeding tends to exist.
Elevation
The heart is in the center of the chest.
If your hand is bleeding heavily, standing up such that all the blood pools in one's lower extremities and keeping your arm above your head can reduce blood pressure slightly, helping slow bleeding. A bleeding wound on one's foot or ankle can sometimes be assisted by lying down and elevating the legs.

Some combination of the above techniques is often thought to help control bleeding in the folk tales of the valleys and hills, and the strange myths of the people whose cabin in the wilderness has few close neighbors. Quaint little legends...
