Most historical medicines are, in fact, plants. Morphine, atropine, and the like are well-known and long of use.

A rather powerful lore has grown up surrounding them, and a small pecentage of them might be true. In either case, from time immemorial, people have been turning to the herbs around them for mild ailments and other assorted things.
Historical sources such as Kings' American Dispensary or American Medical Botany are excellent for precding use, while PubMed with the National Institutes of Health is an excellent library for researching specific plants.
